Central Victorians of all backgrounds are being invited to celebrate NAIDOC Week, with plenty of activities to be run acknowledging the region’s proud and rich First Nations culture.

Speaking to Robbo on the Wake Up Call, Bendigo NAIDOC Committee member Bill Dower said the theme of this year’s Week is “50 Years of Deadly”.

“It’s celebrating 50 years of the NAIDOC event, and celebrating our elders and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” Mr Dower explained.

“But it’s become much broader than that – it’s a whole of community celebration now where we get to see… the beauty of the Aboriginal culture, their art, their connection to Country, dance, all of those things.”

The City of Greater Bendigo began its celebrations today with an official flag-raising ceremony at Larnangurrak – otherwise known as the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporate & Community Centre – on Hattam St in Golden Square.

Morning teas, art exhibitions and workshops are also planned at multiple locations.

NAIDOC Week runs until this Sunday, July 12th nationwide, with a list of the activities happening in Greater Bendigo available via this webpage.
