The Liberals are once again pinning their hopes on a Macedon Ranges Shire councillor.
Kate Kendall was confirmed as the party’s candidate for the state seat of Macedon over the weekend, ahead of this year’s Victorian election.
She currently serves as one of three elected members of the Shire’s West Ward, representing the towns of Kyneton, Malmsbury and Woodend, and was elevated to the role of Mayor last November,
In a statement released last Friday, July 17th, Cr Kendall announced she would be stepping down from her role as Mayor to contest the poll.
“This decision has not been made lightly; however, I believe it’s the right time to explore this opportunity,” Cr Kendall said.
“Over the coming week, I will work closely with the CEO, Deputy Mayor, my fellow councillors and Council staff to ensure a smooth transition of mayoral responsibilities.”
She also vowed to continue serving as a councillor while campaigning for the election.

This isn’t the first time the Liberal Party has endorsed a member of the Shire’s council, with South Ward’s Dom Bonanno contesting Macedon in 2022’s state election.
In a further case of irony, another former Mayor of Macedon Ranges will be vying for the seat this year, with Annette Death endorsed as Labor’s candidate last month.
Macedon looks to be one of the most hotly contested electorates during the 2026 poll, owing to the retirement of sitting MP Mary-Anne Thomas after nearly 12 years in office.
She retained the seat for Labor on a two-party preferred margin of 9.5 percent at the last election.
