30-Hectare Barfold Grass Fire

Central Victorian motorists are being asked to keep the roads around Barfold, Metcalfe and Redesdale clear for emergency service vehicles and equipment following a large grassfire yesterday.

Fire authorities battled a 30-hectare blaze with more than 20 firefighting units called out.
 
The fire is now under control, but crews are still working to make the area safe.

The fire comes just weeks after Victoria’s CFA urged regional communities to prepare for the possibility of an intense grassfire-driven season.
 
CFA has responded to a number of significant grass fires started by mowers, vehicles or machinery in early January.
 
CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said the fires are a “timely reminder” for residents to be take care when using vehicles and other machinery near dry grass.

“Awareness is key to preventing grass and crop fires. We also want farmers to ensure their machinery and equipment are regularly inspected, maintained and cleaned.”
 
“Even pulling over onto tall, dry grass on the side of the road during your travels could start a significant grassfire,” he said.
