Greater Bendigo council’s head honcho is confident visitors will flock to next weekend’s Bendigo Easter Festival, despite the current fuel crisis gripping Australia.

CEO of the City, Andrew Cooney was asked about the issue this week on the Wake Up Call with Robbo.

“We’re doing a fair bit of planning across all of our operations at the moment, just around what impact could fuel have if we have either a shortage of fuel or a continuation of these very, very high prices, and what that might mean [for the Festival],” Mr Cooney said in response.

“We think Easter is… at this stage largely unaffected, and the wonderful thing about Easter for all of our families is you can do lots at Easter for those days without having to shell-out a dollar.

“And we’re really committed to making sure that… we do everything we can to keep Easter cheap and free and accessible.

“Absolutely there’s plenty of opportunity to get in there and spend a few bucks as well on the rides, but there’s so much to do around Easter which is free, which is a great thing for our families.”

Meantime, the Bendigo Chinese Association has called for volunteers to help carry the centrepiece of the event’s Gala Parade, imperial dragon Dai Gum Loong.

President of the Association, Doug Lougoon says they’re looking volunteers aged 16 years and older of any gender.

“Obviously you need to be of reasonable fitness and reasonable strength, but… you don’t have to be [an] Iron Man or Iron Woman to carry Dai Gum Loong,” Mr Lougoon said on the Wake Up Call.

“Particularly these days when we can buddy-up people in pairs to carry it and share a pole on Dai Gum Loong.”

For more information on becoming a volunteer, head to the Association’s website.
