Central Victorian MP Calls For End to Lord’s Prayer

Momentum is building for the Andrews government to replace the Lord’s Prayer in the upper house with a minute of silent reflection.

The Christian Prayer has been a long-standing tradition in state parliament since 1919. 
 
In 2021, former Reason Party MP Fiona Patten called for the practice to be replaced with an inclusive alternative.

Now the calls have been renewed, with Kyneton-based Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell explaining to Neil Mitchell on Gold Central Victoria that Parliament is a “diverse” place. 
 
“That’s why I think at the beginning of the day it should be something that recognises all different religions, or all different beliefs,” she said. 
 
She added that there’s many in Parliament that “are not Christian” and so it’s important to be more inclusive.
