A local government forum in Canberra last Friday revealed that a majority of councils are battling critical skills and workforce shortages in infrastructure and town planning.

A staggering 91 per cent of local governments reported difficulty recruiting suitable employees to fill various job vacancies.
The City of Greater Bendigo’s manager of people and culture Kylie Cheal said the local municipality is no certainly no exception.
“Whilst we’ve filled the vast majority of our positions, we do have a few areas of highly specialist roles that we have struggled to fill,” she said.

Skilled jobs that are struggling to be filled, she said, are “engineers and statutory planners”.
The local government told Gold that the skills crunch is not impacting on council’s major works.

“At the moment, it hasn’t affected any project delivery,” Cheal said.
