Fire authorities have successfully rescued fifteen mine workers from Mandalay Resources’ Augusta Mine, in Costerfield, east of Heathcote on Sunday morning.

It’s believed the workers became stuck after a fire broke out underground at around 12.30am.

District 2 Assistant Chief Fire Officer Steve Alcock said the team conducted “atmospheric monitoring” wearing breathing apparatuses.

“Crews ensured the air was safe and breathable before escorting the 15 workers back up to the surface from the refuge chambers,” he said.

The Country Fire Authority reported that all miners were exited and safe by 6.50am.

“Fortunately, they were all cleared with no reported injuries.”
