Locals Urged to Slow Down Around School Zones

Central Victorian school kids are back today after a big summer break.

While drivers have enjoyed some time off around school zones, acting senior sergeant Fletcher Pearson from Highway Patrol said it’s time to slow down again.
 
“We’ll be tasking, specifically, for the school zones, making sure that all parents and non-parents who are driving through those areas are abiding by the 40 km/h speed zones.”

More than 1400 electronic variable school speed signs are now operating statewide.
 
The Department of Transport’s Kate Murphy said some school speed zones remain permanently in place, not just during drop off and pick up times.
 
 “As students get to and from school, it’s really important that drivers and cyclists are aware and take extra care during busy times,” she said

She added that reducing speed can help “your reaction time” and “stopping distance” if an accident occurs.
