New Report Shows Migration Boom in Central Goldfields

Maryborough, Dunolly and Talbot have exploded with new residents, according to new figures by the Regional Australia Institute.

The Regional Australia Institute’s  Movers Index data shows a whopping 142 per cent increase in net internal migration. 
 
The think tank’s chief economist, Dr Kim Houghton, said the concept of net internal migration is a “bit jargonistic and a bit of a mouthful”, but is actually quite simple.

“It’s simply the balance between people moving in and people moving out,” he said. 
 
He added that services within these growing regional areas of Victoria should be adequately improved to meet demand. 
 
“We’ve seen growth in places that really haven’t experience much population growth in recent years,” he said.

“This has put significant pressure on services in those places.”
