Residents of Greater Bendigo are being told about impending changes regarding what can, and can’t be placed in their kerbside organic waste bin.
As explained to Robbo on the Wake Up Call this week, the new rules are partly being implemented at the behest of the Victorian government.
“The state’s trying to get some consistency around the bins… we’ve got multiple councils with some different arrangements and so they’re trying to get some consistency across the state, which we understand,” the City’s CEO Andrew Cooney told Robbo.
But the changes have also come about due to a fresh contract with another waste collection service.
“We’ve got a new facility that’s being built and will be open pretty soon out at Huntly,” Mr Cooney said.
“It’s a new provider… they’re going to make a different product – a different organic compost product, and… they’ve got some different requirements to what the previous operator had.”
As part of the new arrangement, items that were previously allowed in the green bins such as paper towel, tissues, wooden cutlery, pet waste, hair, tea bags and bioplastics must instead go in the general waste bin, while cardboard and paper should be placed in the recycling bin.
Food scraps, lawn clippings, natural timber and council-issued compostable liners will continue to be accepted as organic waste.
The new rules take effect from October 1st, with more information available on the Greater Bendigo council website.
