According to a peak Australian grains lobby group, one in six Victorian bridges require urgent upgrades.
Thistle Street Bridge will receive $400,000 in repair works to ensure the bridge will continue to stand tall for many years. Detours will be in place as Greater Bendigo Council workers will undertake repairs which are expected to be done by August.
This follows the scrapping of the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program which saw upgrades to Creswick Lawrence Road in Hepburn Shire, Finlay Road in Campaspe Shire and the Bendigo Livestock Exchange canned.
Nationals Member for Northern Victoria, Gaelle Broad, says many roads and bridges in the region were in poor condition after years of neglect under the Labor State Government.
“Under Labor, just 13 per cent of new infrastructure spending has gone to regional projects, although 25 per cent of Victoria’s population lives in regional Victoria,” Ms Broad said.
“The State Government has failed to prioritise key regional projects and the Federal Labor Government is doing the same.”
