Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) says they will be conducting several planned burns across Central Victoria in the coming weeks, if the weather permits.

Residents in and around the towns of Avoca, Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maryborough and Taradale are advised that burning will get underway on public land.

Deputy chief fire officer at FFMVic, Scott Falconer, said fire breaks are the “most effective” method for bush fire management.

“Reducing fine fuels such as grass, leaves, bark and sticks as well as shrubs and fallen branches means fires are less intense and slower to spread, making it more likely that firefighters can keep
bushfires small and contained before they pose a risk to communities.”

Crews will also carry out mowing, slashing and clearing and work alongside Traditional Owners in the cultural burning space.
