Offender tried to hand himself in, station closed

The head of the police union says the suspect in a fatal Gisborne stabbing went to hand himself into a local police station at 5.30 yesterday but no one was there to arrest him.

The police association says only 1 officer was on duty at the Gisborne police station but they couldn't open the door because they were working solo.

The alleged killer rang the doorbell and it was diverted to Kyneton.

The union says more police are needed in the Macedon Rangers.

A 55-year-old man was arrested without incident a short time later and a separate police crew went to the victim's unit in Rodney Street

It's now understood the victim may have died up to 4-days ago.
