Bendigo locals looking to go fossicking for gold in the hopes of striking it rich are being reminded to ensure they have the proper paperwork to do so.
The reminder comes after a Bendigo family found a nugget while out walking on Sunday that's worth an estimated $35,000.
Earth Resources Victoria says if you're planning to go searching for the precious metal recreationally, you need to hold a Miner's Right, and that there's inspectors across Bendigo who conduct spot checks on people fossicking.
Minerals in Victoria, including gold, are owned by the Crown, and without holding the Miner's Right, you are unable to keep any gold found.
