Bendigo has joined the fight in calling on the federal government to release funds allocated to regional airports.
The appeal comes from Regional Capitals Australia after a report released earlier this month included a recommendation into a review into the funding of regional airport infrastructure and maintenance.
The Regional Airports Program is worth $100 million in total by the federal government, however it's not expected the entirety of the upgrades required for the Bendigo Airport will be allocated under the fund, with the upgrade to a new terminal building at the Bendigo Airport is set to cost close to $10 million.
Around $4.4 million being sought from the Regional Airports Program, with close to $4.5 million sought from the state government. The City of Greater Bendigo intends to contribute $1 million for the project.
The renewed calls come after a report released earlier this month found many regional airports around Australia were operating at a loss, and faced substantially higher maintenance and expansion costs compared to airports in capital cities and heavily populated areas.
