Far right extremist looks to lodge appeal against 2017 conviction

County Court of Victoria

Far right extremist Blair Cottrell is moving to have his racial vilificatoin conviction overturned.

Cottrell and two others were convicted and fined $2,000 in September 2017 after a mock beheading in a video protest against the building of a mosque in Bendigo.

His lawyers have this week sought permission from the County Court to take the case higher for appeal, arguing his conviction doesn't match up with Victoria's Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.

Judge Lisa Hannan is set to hand down her decision regarding the potential appeal on July 16.
