Bridgewater Bakehouse has taken out the title of Australia's best vanilla slice for the second year in a row.
The 22nd Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph was held in Mildura on Saturday, and there was some fierce local competition.
Bridgewater Bakehouse baker Patrick O'Toole says he was hesitant to make any changes to his award-winning recipe, but his decision to stay true to his roots paid off.
Jason Riley, who has judged the event for 19 years, says sampling all the slices isn't always easy.
Judges have to evaluate four key factors when for each slice: pastry, custard, fondant and presentation.
“The job definitely has its positives, but it can be tough to decide.”
But his best tip when it comes to creating a good vanilla slice? Keep it simple.
“It’s a simple product, and a lot of people try to over complicate it,” he said.
Bridgewater Bakehouse says they're now preparing for sales of their award winning slice to ramp up following their back-to-back wins.
