The Victorian Electoral Commission says locals won't have to head back to the polls to find Buloke Shire's new councillor.
There's currently a vacant spot in the council after John Shaw resigned last week, but the VEC says they will undertake a countback of votes to determine who will fill the role.
The VEC will distribute Shaw's votes amongst the eligible candidates who were unsuccessful back in 2016, then whoever gets more than 50 per cent of the vote will be elected to the Lower Avoca Ward.
The new councillor will be decided on September 17.
