When It's Alex Van Halen

Drummer with Van Halen, Alex Van Halen is 66 on the 8th of May.

Brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen were born in Amsterdam moving to California when they were still kids.

Alex started learning piano, moving to guitar and finally settling on drums.

The Van Halens first formed a band at school when Alex was in fourth grade playing performances at lunchtime.

As an adult, Alex was in various bands with Eddie including The Broken Combs, The Space Brothers and Mammoth.

David Lee Roth took over from Eddie on lead vocals in Mammoth and Michael Anthony joined and the the band's name was changed to Van Halen.

After releasing five studio albums and recording a number of cover versions, the band exploded in 1984 with the song Jump.

The album 1984 was a smash but surprisingly lead singer David Lee Roth left to launch a solo career.

Sammy Hagar took over and the band released two great albums 5150 and OU812 with hits like Dreams, When It's Love and Love Walks In.

Sammy parted ways with the band in '96 and David Le Roth rejoined temporarily then Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone took over as frontman.

Sammy rejoined Van Halen in 2003 until David Lee Roth came back in 2007.

Alex's son Wolfgrang joined Van Halen in 2006 replacing MIchael Anthony on bass.
