Raise A Glass For The Piano Man

Singer, songwriter and musician Billy Joel turns 69 on the 9th of May.

Billy's mother insisted he take piano lessons at an early age and he received encouragement from staff at his school Hicksville High School to make music his career.

During the mid to late 60's he played in various bands before he released his debut album Cold Spring Harbor in 1971. It included the single She's Got A Way but it was a commercial failure.

Billy performed as a solo artist under the name Bill Martin at piano bars and this inspired the song Piano Man. The single and album were released in 1973 and Billy cracked the Top 40.
