Google has a habit of shaking up the smartphone market just when things start to feel a bit “samey”. With the arrival of the Google Pixel 10a, they have streamlined the 10 series. Full disclosure, I loved their Google Pixel 10 pro model so much that I bought one after sending back the review device. Now this 10a is a very different beast at a very different price point but that is actually a breath of fresh air.

A Design That Actually Lies Flat

The most striking thing about the Pixel 10a is the all-new “bumpless” design. For years, we have accepted the “camera bar” as a necessary evil, but Google has managed to make the dual-camera system flush with the back of the device. It is a unique look for the A-Series that feels incredibly modern. The did attempt this with the 9a, but there was a slight curve to it still, the 10a is pure flatness with zero table wobble.

This also means that it slides into a pocket without snagging. The finish is premium too, featuring a textured matte back and a smooth satin metal frame. It comes in four standout colours: Lavender, Berry, Fog, and Obsidian. I never put much thought into phone colour as you generally pop a case over it anyway, there is something about have a case that matches the phone colour though which is why I opt for the official Pixel cases. It’s important to note thought that because your phone is flat, the case makes the camera indented rather than flush. All that hard work undone by the protector.

Pro-Grade Photography Without the Pro Price

Pixel phones live and die by their cameras, and the 10a is no exception. It features a 48 MP main sensor paired with a 13 MP ultrawide lens. But the hardware is only half the story, the real magic is the AI integration.

New for the A-Series is Camera Coach, which uses Gemini models to guide your framing and composition in real-time. It is like having a professional photographer whispering in your ear. Then there is Auto Best Take, which intelligently captures or merges photos to ensure everyone in the group has their eyes open and is smiling.

For the editors, the Magic Editor now allows you to “Reimagine” your photos. You can select an area, type a prompt like “field of wildflowers,” and watch the AI transform the scene. I like what this does, but also can’t help but feel it takes away from what makes a photo special.

I want to see the moment people are capturing, not the moment they want to capture if they were in a completely different or perfect place. It’s getting harder to tell which photos are real in my instagram feed and as a result, the experience is less appealing. There’s no doubt the tech is amazing, I just want to know if my mate really went to the top of Mount Everest and picked the only flower growing in a field of snow as a polar bear gave him a cuddle and aliens watched from a rock nearby.

Built for the Real World

Google has clearly prioritised durability this year, calling this the most durable A-Series yet. The 6.3-inch Actua display is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i, offering significantly better scratch and drop resistance than previous models. It also boasts an IP68 rating, meaning it can handle the inevitable spills and dust of daily life. Are we at a stage where we can do away with a case altogether, no, but surely we are not far off it.

Under the hood, it’s powered by the Google Tensor G4 chip and 8 GB of RAM, the same foundation found in its more expensive siblings. Perhaps most impressively, Google is promising seven years of OS and security updates, meaning this phone is a genuine long-term investment.

The battery boasts an impressive 30 hours before you need to charge and even then there is fast charging capable of up to 50% in about 30 minutes and wireless charging that you don’t often see at this price point. The phone doesn’t snap to the charger though, so no magnets, but hey don’t be greedy.

The Verdict

At a time when flagship prices are soaring, the Pixel 10a offers incredible build for the value. In Australia, where we appreciate a device that can handle the elements and doesn’t break the bank, the Pixel 10a hits the sweet spot. It’s sturdy, stylish, and carries the best camera software in the business.

This is a really easy phone to recommend and it fits nicely into it’s place as an entry point to the Google ecosystem. If you are wanting to jump out of the clutches of the Apple iPhone experience and into something more affordable that still offers a similar user experience then Pixel is where you want to be. Google has even been rolling out things like “Quick Share” which communicates with Apples “Airdrop” meaning that even that old excuse is now obsolete.
