Speed the big issue over Aust Day long weekend

Drivers who break the speed limit continue to trouble our police.

Data has been released following Operation Amity – Victoria Police’s road-safety blitz conducted over the Australia Day long weekend – showing the number of speeding offences detected in our region far outnumbered all others.

Locally, the statistics reveal the number of fines handed for speeding was:

  • 62 in the Bendigo Police Service Area;
  • 29 in the Goldfields region;
  • 19 in the Campaspe region, and
  • 38 in the Macedon Ranges.

It was a similar case elsewhere in Victoria, with 2,288 instances of speeding detected statewide over the four-day period, out of a total of 5,518 offences.

The release of the figures comes as Term 1 of a new school year begins this week, prompting a plea for drivers to stay vigilant behind the wheel.

Police are warning that reduced speed limits will be enforced within designate School Zones from 8am to 9.30am, and again between 2.30pm and 4pm on weekdays until April 2nd.
