Speeding drivers remain the biggest bugbear for Central Victorian police.

That’s according to data from Operation Furlong, which took place from last Friday, October 30th to Tuesday, November 3rd over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

The road-safety blitz was conducted right across the state with officers targeting unsafe driving behaviours.

Figures shared with our newsroom by Victoria Police reveal that of the 87 offences reported in the Bendigo service area, 40 were for excessive speed.

It was also the most-common offence detected in the Goldfields and Macedon Ranges units.

Meantime, 14 notices were issued within Bendigo for disobeying signs or signals, six for driving while unlicenced, five for seatbelt offences and four for unregistered vehicles.

Police have expressed their concern about the data, as well as the amount of fatalities recorded in Victoria.

According to VicPol’s Acting Road Policing Assistant Commissioner, Peta Barrett, 10 people lost their lives in traffic collisions over the long weekend, including a man in Maryborough.

“Take a moment to consider your actions – speeding, drink / drug use, seatbelts, mobile phones – all have fatal consequences,” Acting Asst Comm Barrett said.
