A flood levy is soon to be constructed in Bendigo’s north thanks to $12.25 million in funding from the federal and Victorian governments.

It’ll be placed along Racecourse Creek in Epsom to prevent overbank flooding and better protect residents from a potential one-in-100-year flood event.

The Commonwealth’s contribution of $6 million was made possible through a successful application made as part of Round Four of its Disaster Ready Fund.

According to Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters, the funding was applied for after a significant flood event in October 2022 that impacted Epsom and the nearby township of Huntly.

“The Racecourse Creek Flood Levy project will reduce the flood risk to over 500 local homes and 60 local businesses,” Ms Chesters said in a statement.

“This is a fast-growing area of our community, and this project will help to give these residents better piece of mind and help future proof the area.”
