This Saturday, April 25th marks Anzac Day throughout Central Victoria.
The event falls of the anniversary of two major events in Australia’s modern history: the landing of our armed forces at Gallipoli in 1915, and the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in 1918.
Both events took place during the First World War and were significant for different reasons.
In the instance of the Gallipoli landing, it marked the beginning of an ill-fated campaign in which members of the British Empire failed to capture the Dardanelles strait in modern-day Türkiye.
Conversely, the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux is considered one of Australian Army’s greatest victories, in which they successfully repelled an attack by German forces – a feat the French town has never forgotten.
