
A local fish and chip shop owner has lashed at McDonalds for its newly-introduced potato cakes, claiming the fast-food chain is launching the product while small businesses are facing severe shortages.

Australian potato production has been hit by heavy rainfall in late 2022, resulting in a 25 per cent increase in wholesale prices.
Owner of the Blue Sea Fish Shop in Castlemaine Chris Dimopolous posted to TikTok to vent his frustration about what he says is a McDonalds “marketing ploy”.

“Where are these potatoes coming from?”
“Every fish shop that I know around here is struggling to get chips, potatos, potato cakes,”.
“We make our own potato cakes from scratch and it just keeps getting harder and harder,” he said.

He added that his business has had to “absorb” the costs of many increases in basic ingredients.
