Police reckon they’ve found the person responsible for lighting a fire that damaged a Bendigo church.
A 63-year-old male was arrested at a California Gully address on the morning of Wednesday, August 19th by members of the Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit.
According to a post on the Eyewatch Bendigo Facebook page, he’s been charged with criminal damage by fire and the possession of cannabis.
The man faced the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court that same day, with a judge ordering he undergo a psychiatric assessment.
This comes after a blaze took hold of the historic St Kilian’s Catholic Church building on the corner of McCrae and Bridge Streets on July 31st, damaging the sacristy.
Investigators had initially determined the cause to be non-suspicious, before last week revealing they were still looking into the matter.
Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses of the incident to come forward, and encourage anyone with information to contact the Bendigo Police Station on (03) 5448 1300.
