A church in Bendigo’s CBD dating back to the 19th century has been damaged by fire.
The blaze took hold of St Kilian’s church on McCrae St before sunrise this morning (Friday, July 31st) with Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and CFA crews responding to the incident at 5.53am.
“Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes to find a weatherboard church with the rear of the building well alight,” a spokesperson for FRV told our newsroom.
“Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and worked inside the building to force back the fire.
“Firefighters were successful in holding the fire back to the rear of the church.
“Cladding and inside walls were removed from the church to check for fire extension.
“A ladder platform fire truck was set up to deal with the fire moving into the building roof.
“Firefighters removed items of religious significance for safety.
“The incident was deemed Under Control at 7.06am.
“The cause of the fire will be investigated.
“Victoria Police was on the scene.”
Warnings about the fire were issued via the VicEmergency app and website informing nearby residents that smoke may be visible.
Early investigations suggest the cause of the blaze is not suspicious, with damage contained to building’s sacristy – a room where items of religious significance are stored and priests ready themselves for church services.
In a Facebook post the church’s priest, Father Junray Rayna expressed his appreciation for the efforts of first responders.
“We are grateful that the church itself is safe,” Fr Junray said.
“While the sacristy has sustained significant damage, we give thanks that no one was injured and extend our sincere gratitude to the CFA, FRV, Victoria Police and all emergency services for their swift response and care.”
The church building is one of the oldest of its kind in Australia, dating back to 1888.
