Residents and landholders within the City of Greater Bendigo have been invited to have their say on a most pressing issue: housing.

A draft Affordable Housing Action Plan is now public, detailing how the council can assist governments, community services and developers in bringing more low-cost homes to the region.

The City’s CEO, Andrew Cooney spoke about the importance of the document on the Wake Up Call earlier this week.

“When I go around the community and when I go into different meetings around the state, the one thing that we all talk about is housing, and the need to have more housing, the need to have affordable housing, and the need to have different houses for different types of situations,” Mr Cooney said.

“And so the council’s working through our role in making sure we’re providing affordable housing for the community.”

He added that doesn’t necessarily involve the City building properties, “but in some instances that could happen”.

The new Plan comes during a period of significant housing stress.

A report released by REA Group in November last year claimed that just one in every 100 homes in Victoria were considered “affordable” to people on low incomes.
