Former Miner Unable to Lift Son Receives Record Payout

An ex-Central Victoria gold miner has been awarded one of the biggest employee compensation payouts in the history of the Victorian courts.

30-year-old Patrick McGiffin has been awarded more than $1.95 million in damages by the Supreme Court over an incident at the Fosterville Gold Mine in 2018. 
 
McGiffin was hit in the head by a large rotating bolt and claimed there had been workplace negligence on the part of Fosterville. 
 
He argued in court that he suffers from complex regional pain syndrome from the incident, resulting in him not being able lift his 18-month-old son.
