Elements the judges are looking for include:

  • Colour: Completely translucent water, without any white or brown tones
  • Clarity: Crystal-clear water with minimal turbidity
  • Odour: Samples with a nice scent
  • Taste: Samples that are pleasing to the palate

The association says to think of wine tasting – without needing to spit out – and you won’t be far off! Ground coffee is also sniffed between tastings to cleanse the palate.

The suppliers of the winning samples from each of the state-based competitions have been invited to compete for the national title as part of the IXOM 2024 Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia competition, hosted in Tasmania in November 2024. Tasmania currently has bragging rights, as the winning sample at the IXOM 2023 Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia came from TasWater and its Fern Tree Water Treatment Plant.

The IXOM 2024 Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia competition is a testament to the high quality of our water and the industry’s diligence and commitment to providing an abundant supply of safe, great-tasting water.

The competition works to bring awareness to the expense and hard work that goes into delivering household water. The association says, “It’s the norm to turn on a tap for a drink of water, to cook or take a shower, and give no thought to what it takes to operate and maintain the municipal water infrastructure.

“Australians tend to take safe, clean, and good-tasting drinking water for granted. When people turn on the tap, they just expect that it will be there. Most members of the general public would be surprised by the expense and hard work that goes into delivering household water.”
