Hundreds of Native Bird Carcasses Washing Up at Bells Swamp Near Maldon

Reports have emerged that a further 200 native water bird carcasses were pulled from Bells Swamp in Bendigo’s West on Wednesday.

Gold Central Victoria couldn’t verify the claims, however, Parks Victoria have confirmed at least 350 birds have died between Thursday the 9th and Tuesday the 14th.  
 
Parks Victoria district manager Suzanne Hughes said 25 personnel have been on site including their own staff, Wildlife Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action groups. 
 
“We appreciate the support and concern of community members, but no further volunteers are required at this stage and we’re asking that people stay away from the reserve until further notice.”

“Do not enter the water, do not handle sick or dead birds without authorisation, and take care that pets are kept away from the area.”
 
The cause of the mass casualties remains a mystery, with “samples” taken by Parks Victoria for testing.
