New Player Points System as Picola League Unaffiliated With AFL

The Echuca-based Picola Football Netball League is set to be unaffiliated with the AFL, which is a move that could have a ripple effect for other country leagues across central and northern Victoria.

The changes means the league has introduced its own player points system and a salary cap of $95,000.
 
The new points system has allocated more points (46) to teams finishing in the bottom rung of the ladder, while those on top of the ladder receive less points (40). 
 
Operations manager Shane Railton has told Gold that it means they won’t be dictated to by the AFL’s governing bodies.

“Our league’s rules are voted in through a democratic situation whereby clubs all vote them in,” he said.
 
“Our most important people are our clubs.”

All 15 clubs will remain in the league.
