More cost-of-living relief has been announced for Central Victorians.
Premier, and Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan confirmed over the weekend that annual registration fees for vehicles will be slashed by 20 percent as a “one-off” measure.
This follows last week’s announcement that a free public transport initiative would be extended for trains, trams and buses right across Victoria until May 31st.
“As Premier, I’m determined to use government to help Victorians who are under pressure,” Ms Allan said in a statement.
“Like cheaper PT [public transport] this won’t fix everything, but it’s immediate action I can take to make a difference.
“We can afford it because it’s one-off cost-of-living help right now, while we are delivering a surplus.”
Those comments come after economists recent warned that measures like free public transport risk Victoria’s ability to pay-off government debts and a downgrade to our credit rating.
Current estimates suggest the state’s debt levels will reach $167 billion by the end of this financial year.
The cut to rego fees applies to all vehicles with a kerb weight of under 4.5 tonnes, including cars, utes and motorcycles.
A single vehicle owner can save $186 through the scheme, while households are able to get discounts on up to two vehicles – meaning a total saving of $372.
Cost-savings will be offered in the form of a rebate via the Services Victoria website or app from June 1st, with applications closing on July 31st.
