A major Australian study has found growing inequality and cost-of-living pressures in regional communities are weighing down our social cohesion.
The survey of more than 7,500 Australians reveals nearly half of us (48%) believe economic problems are the most important issue facing our nation today.
A record number of Australians (84%) also believe the gap between those with high and low incomes is too large, while over 1 in 10 say they sometimes or often go without food.

The report’s author, Doctor James O’Donnell, says the latest findings paint a mixed picture, particularly for those living outside the major capitals.
