Central Victorians have been warned to prepare for an earlier than usual start to our next bushfire season.

That information comes direct from the Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Winter 2026, released by authorities on Thursday, May 28th.

The report notes that Victoria was “unseasonably” warm and dry in April, conditions which are set to continue over the coming months.

“Underlying soil dryness remains, particularly across south west and central Victoria encroaching into West Gippsland,” the report states.

“Looking ahead, winter is forecast to be warmer and drier than average across much of the state.

“If this pattern persists, statewide dryness will gradually increase through winter and into early spring.

“This may increase the potential for an earlier than normal onset of the fire danger season, particularly in areas where rainfall remains below average.

“If the current drying trend continues, Victoria is likely to experience a very significant and extended fire season.”
