Victoria’s heatwave conditions are reaching their peak today (January 27th) with temperatures in the mid- to high-40s expected.

Maryborough is set to be the hottest place in our patch, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a top of 45 degrees in the town.

Should the prediction come true, that would make it Maryborough’s hottest January day on-record, surpassing the high of 44.8 degrees set on January 25th, 2019.

Bendigo could reach a top of 44 – roughly two degrees shy of its January record – while in Castlemaine, a high of 42 degrees is forecast.

Meantime, in the state’s north-west, Mildura and Ouyen are both predicted to reach 49 degrees.

In light of the potential record-breaking heat, V/Line is enforcing a Full Extreme Heat timetable on all routes, including the Bendigo and Maryborough lines, while the CFA has issued a statewide Total Fire Ban.

Authorities are urging us to take what precautions we can to beat the heat, which include staying indoors, seeking shade and finding air-conditioned venues to cool-off – whether that be at home or public facilities such as libraries.

While conditions are expected to cool slightly tomorrow, Central Victorians won’t be getting any real relief from the heat until Sunday, with daytime temperatures expected to remain in the 30s until then.
