Our region has copped an intense downpour on an afternoon of wet and humid conditions, with some areas seeing a month’s worth of rain fall in a matter of minutes.

The severe weather event impacted the state on Tuesday, February 24th.

As predicted by authorities, Bendigo was one of the hardest-hit areas statewide, with 28.2mm of rain recorded in less than an hour at the City’s airport.

Strong wind gusts of 80 km/h were also felt between 6.20pm and 6.30pm.

The Bendigo SES unit responded to 35 requests for assistance in the wake of the thunderstorm activity, the most of any unit in Victoria.

14 of those incidents were related to flooding, 12 for building damage and another seven for fallen trees.

Statewide, SES volunteers were called to 310 incidents in the 24 hours to 6am today.

Nearby towns also saw huge falls, with 20.2mm registered in the Bureau’s gauge at Redesdale, 32.2mm seen in Gisborne and 42.4mm in Kyabram.

Bendigo has now recorded 43.6mm of rain so far this month, well-above the long-term February average of 29.6mm.

The wet weather is set to continue in Central Victoria, with further storm activity expected this weekend.

As such, the SES is reminding us to make sure we’re “storm ready” by clearing the drains and gutters on our properties to ensure proper drainage.
