Central Victorians are being allowed to catch public transport without paying a single cent for an entire month.

The initiative was announced yesterday by the state government, and applies to all train and bus services right across Victoria – including V/Line’s and suburban routes, such as those operated by Christian’s Bus Company in Bendigo.

That means passengers won’t have to purchase a ticket, nor will they need to activate their Myki cards.

In a statement, Premier and Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan said the move was happening in response to rising fuel prices.

“This is a temporary measure to help with the cost of living – it will take pressure off the pump and help you save,” Ms Allan said.

“This won’t solve every problem, but it’s an immediate step to help Victorians right now while we keep working on new solutions to make Victoria more affordable.”

It’s hoped the initiative will help businesses and households by reducing the amount of traffic on our roads, and in turn lower the cost of fuel for motorists.

Petrol and diesel have both skyrocketed in price recently due to conflict in the Middle-East.

At the time of writing, regular unleaded is being sold for as much as $2.70 per litre in Bendigo, and $3.28 for diesel.

The government expects to see an increase in passengers on trains and buses as a result of their temporary measure, but is confident that Victoria’s public transport network will be able to keep-up with demand.

Commuters can take advantage of free public transport statewide from tomorrow (Tuesday, March 31st) until April 30th.
