A Bendigo-based MP wants to know our thoughts on what should happen to the city’s former Law Courts.
Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad claims the heritage building is “falling into a state of disrepair” after the new Bendigo Law Courts opened in February 2023 on the corner of Hargreaves and Mundy Sts.
“The old Bendigo Law Courts are a beautiful example of Bendigo’s heritage architecture from the 1890s and sit in Pall Mall, which is full of significant buildings from that time,” Ms Broad said in a statement.
She added that the state government promised there would be community consultation on their future two years ago, “but none has occurred.”
“I’ve asked the Attorney-General to visit Bendigo, tour the historic building with the National Trust and commit to genuine community engagement.”
Until then, Ms Broad – an Opposition MP who sits with the National Party in parliament’s upper-house – is encouraging us to participate in an online survey regarding the building’s future.
The survey has been commissioned by an intern in Ms Broad’s office, Chelsea Pentland, as part of her studies at the University of Melbourne.
It asks respondents what they’d like to see the old Law Courts used for, with “Museum”, “Event venue” and “Hotel” among the selectable options.
The survey can be accessed on Ms Broad’s website or via this link.
