A draft Strategy concerning street lighting in Central Goldfields Shire has been made public, with the region’s council now seeking feedback on the issue.
Talking with Robbo on the Wake Up Call, the Shire’s CEO Peter Harriott described the document as “unusual” but very important.
“We want to identify where there are any gaps in our lighting systems out there; we want to ensure that all of our street lights are energy efficient, and… we want to consider the impact on native animals,” Mr Harriott said.
“There’s some trends at the moment to change colours – to go away from the bright lights at night, and adjust the colours so the magpies and kookaburras can get a good night’s sleep.”
He added that council still wishes to maintain a “safe lighting environment” in the community.
The Shire expects the new Strategy will require an estimated capital investment of approximately $440,000, with “modest increases” in ongoing maintenance costs.
The document can be viewed and commented on via the Shire’s online Engage portal until June 19th.
Mr Harriott said council will also be preparing a separate draft Strategy on lighting at the region’s sports grounds, which is expected to be made public at a later date.
