Tributes are being paid following the death of prominent Bendigo identity Russell Jack.
His passing at the age of 91 was confirmed in a Facebook post by daughter Anita Jack on Tuesday, August 11th.
“Dad lived a remarkable life and was known and loved by many,” the post reads.
“We know that news of his passing will be felt deeply by people across the community, and we are very grateful for the friendship, respect and affection shown to him over so many years.”
Mr Jack is the descendant of Chinese migrants who came to Victoria during the Gold Rush of the 19th century, and played a prominent role in promoting their culture throughout his life.
Most Central Victorians recognise him as the man who would lead the imperial dragon Sun Loong, and later Dai Gum Loong, during the Bendigo Easter Festival’s Gala Parade.
Additionally, he spent 32 years as president of the Bendigo Chinese Association, and was instrumental in founding the Golden Dragon Museum – today one of the city’s top tourist attractions.
His successor as BCA president, Doug Lougoon noted in an interview with our newsroom how Mr Jack played an active role at the Museum until his retirement in 2019, often unlocking the doors when the venue opened each morning.
“He used to cook for the school groups and visitors and tour groups as well… he was just a great person who contributed wholly to the wellbeing of the Golden Dragon Museum, the Association, and the Chinese community of Bendigo,” Mr Lougoon said.
Among the other figures to have acknowledged his legacy are former Mayor of Greater Bendigo Andrea Metcalf and Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allan.
The Jack family has asked for privacy as they process their loss, adding that details about a funeral will be shared “when the time is right”.
Mr Lougoon told us the Association stands “ready to assist” in celebrating Mr Jack’s life.
“The admiration of Russell extends not only through Bendigo but across Victoria and Australia, and internationally of course, so there’ll be plenty of people who would like to pay tribute to him, and I’m sure… there’ll be appropriate arrangements made in the not-too-distant future.”
