Bendigo man Glenn Ashby has smashed the wind-powered land speed world record.

Strathfieldsaye-raised World Champion sailor, Glenn Ashby, piloted the land yacht, named ‘Horonuku’, to 222.4k/ph with 22 knots of wind on Lake Gairdner in South Australia on Sunday night.
Ashby later told media outlets that it was thrill to be a part of the event, however he believes the New Zealand Emirates team can go faster.
He said the force and velocity of the land yacht was a “different game”.

“It was certainly pretty puffy and shifty, I thought it was going to be difficult.”
Ashby thanked both his Team New Zealand colleagues Matteo de Nora and Grant Dalton.

“Thanks for having belief in an innovative and cool technological program,” he said.
The previous record was set by Brit Richard Jenkins almost 14 years ago.
