Police in Bendigo have called in the bomb squad after a suspicious item was dropped on a major road.
The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, June 23rd following a collision between a police car and an electric bike.
In a statement to Gold Central Victoria, a police spokesperson said the e-bike rider was wearing a balaclava when he was spotted by officers on patrol.
“Several units converged on the area to locate the man when the rider, who was travelling along Don Street, collided with a police car as he tried to ride off about 2.30am,” the spokesperson said.
“The 33-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“He will be interviewed by police at a later date after a small suspect device was located at the scene.
“The Bomb Response Unit attended and assessed the item before the area was deemed safe.”
Don Street is one of the busiest thoroughfares in Bendigo, connecting High Street with Eaglehawk Road and designated as part of the Calder Highway (state route A79).
Police cars cordoned off the road between High and Mackenzie Streets, near Girton Grammar as they assessed the situation, before it reopened to traffic around sunrise.
