Funds have been promised by the Victorian government for safety upgrades at two notorious Bendigo blackspots.

Next week’s state budget will see a share of $73.4 million provided to fix the Calder Highway/Maiden Gully Rd T-intersection, and Epsom’s Midland Highway/Howard Street crossroad.

The pledge was announced locally yesterday (Wednesday, April 29th) by Premier, and Member for Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan in Maiden Gully, alongside Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards.

Among those welcoming the announcement is City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Thomas Prince.

“Both intersections have been long-time advocacy priorities of Council, with significant work needed to improve safety and access,” Cr Prince said in a statement.

“We are grateful to the Victorian Government for such significant investments in road projects in our region, both of which will deliver enhanced safety and accessibility for our community.”

Also expressing support is Member for Northern Victoria, and Opposition MP Wendy Lovell, who has been lobbying for the Epsom intersection to be fixed since 2021.

“I’m pleased that my sustained advocacy for upgrades to these two major intersections will finally result in the people of Bendigo getting the safer roads that they deserve,” Ms Lovell said.

It’s expected the Maiden Gully intersection will have traffic lights installed, while the Epsom crossroad – which is already signalled – is being altered to help ease congestion and aid the flow of vehicles.

The state budget will be delivered next Tuesday, May 5th.
