Police are putting warnings out to drivers across the Bendigo region following a 64% increase in January fatalities on the state’s roads

It comes after several deaths in central Victoria recently, including a 30-year-old woman in Laanecoorie on the January 30.
So far, 43 lives have been lost on Victoria’s roads this year – 29 of which were on rural and regional roads.

Assistant commissioner of road policing Glenn Weir telling Neil Mitchell on Gold that most incidences simply require drivers be more alert.
“A simple lapse in concentration can have catastrophic consequences,” he said.
Confirming that unfortunately, and perhaps surprisingly, it’s locals who die on regional roads, and it can be avoided.

“It is a common misconception that it’s not locals losing their lives on rural roads, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.”
He said their investigations show fatigue, distractions and road user errors have caused many deaths on regional and rural roads.
