An information session will be held in Maryborough later this month regarding the region’s push for World Heritage status.

The event is being hosted by the Victorian Goldfields World Heritage Bid Project Team, in partnership with Central Goldfields Shire.

CEO of the Shire, Peter Harriott is encouraging residents to attend.

“The project team that are putting the bid together, they’ll explain the Victorian government support, what the councils are doing as well, and the benefits that this [bid] could provide to the community and the businesses, which is significant through a boost to tourism,” he explained on the Wake Up Call.

“Wherever there’s a World Heritage classification, people flock, so that’s what we want to see around here.”

Efforts to declare Victoria’s goldfields region an official World Heritage Area received a significant boost in January last year, when it was placed on a Tentative List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, or UNESCO.

If approved, the designation would apply to 15 Victorian councils and their infrastructure associated with the goldrush of the 19th century, such as heritage buildings and mines.

The upcoming information session will take place on May 28th, between 2pm to 3.30pm at the Maryborough Community Hub on Burns Street.
