As domestic violence continues to impact the region and the nation, two Central Victorian non-profits are hoping to make it easier for victims to escape its wrath.
More emergency shelter has been made available in suburban Bendigo after the opening of three new homes on Thursday, May 22nd.
The three-bedroom properties will be managed by Haven Home Safe, and support women and children accessing the services of Annie North – a local charity committed to ending domestic and family violence.
“It is important to Haven Home Safe that there are affordable and accessible housing options for women and children escaping family violence in regional cities and towns,” Haven CEO Trudi Ray said.
“These are beautiful, high-quality homes that have been designed with care and consideration for the needs of renters.
“Each home has 7-star energy rating, solar collection, rainwater tanks as well as energy efficient heating, cooling and hot water, meaning that renters will have reduced household bills and less financial stress.”
Meantime, Annie North CEO Michelle Crawford said the properties would provide a foundation from which women and children can “begin again”.
“For the women, children and young people that Annie North supports, the development of these beautiful properties means safety, dignity and the opportunity to move from crisis toward stability and independence,” Ms Crawford said.
Also in attendance at the official opening was Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters, an acknowledgement of the Commonwealth’s Safe Places grants that made the project possible.
“I would like to congratulate these amazing local organisations for their commitment and collaboration on this vital project,” Ms Chesters said.
“These new Safe Places homes in Bendigo will provide a new beginning for many women and children experiencing family and domestic violence.”
All three properties will be fully furnished ahead of their first tenants arriving in the coming days.
