International medical graduates could be contracted and trained, locally, to provide more after hours GP care and support aged residential care in regional Victoria.

Bendigo Community Health Services (BCHS) has requested funding from the federal government to build a new International Medical Employment, Training and Supervision Hub, which it claims would help “overcome challenges” within the industry.
Executive leader for the Better Health division at BCHS, Graem Kelly, said it’s hoped this practical proposal can help rural and regional communities gain access to better healthcare.

“Like everyone, we’re sick of hearing the football of Australian healthcare, mainly the GP services, being kicked around with no real solutions.”
He said this proposed hub, which could deliver upwards of 60 GPs over a six year period, would also “reduce the risk of burnout for GPs” in small towns.
