A man who reportedly admitted to being intoxicated while behind the wheel in Maryborough could soon be banned from driving for at least two years.

According to Victoria Police, two officers were on proactive patrol in the district late on Saturday night (February 21st) when they observed a vehicle allegedly attempting to avoid police contact.

The vehicle was intercepted a short time later, with the officers detecting a “strong smell of alcohol” emanating from the driver.

The male probationary driver was unable to produce his licence, and driving a vehicle that wasn’t fitted with an interlock device – a condition of his current licence.

He then turned down a request to complete a roadside Preliminary Breath Test, and refused to accompany police to the nearby station for an evidentiary breath test.

Afterwards, the man left the scene on foot, telling officers he was “pissed as a parrot”.

Police say he will now face the Magistrates’ Court, charged with refusing to accompany police – an offence that carries a mandatory minimum two-year licence disqualification, along with other offences.
